JAKARTA - Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will propose tightening the law (UU) on firearms, following Sunday's mass shooting.
At least 15 people were killed in a mass shooting in Australia's Bondi Beach area on Sunday, while dozens more were still being treated in hospital, according to local police.
PM Albanese said "the need for tighter gun laws" would be on the agenda for a national cabinet meeting at around 16:00 local time.
"This afternoon, at four o'clock, I will put on the national cabinet agenda a law on stricter gun laws, including restrictions on the number of firearms that can be used or licensed by individuals, and a review of licenses within a certain period of time," said PM Albanese to the media, launching BBC (15/12).
"People's conditions change. People can become radical in a certain period of time. Licenses should not apply forever," he continued.
PM Albanese said the Australian Government would "put forward a proposal to the national Cabinet this afternoon to empower agencies to research what can be done in this area".
Previously, the local police in a press statement on Monday said that the suspect in the shooting on Sunday that killed about 15 people, namely a father (50) and his son (24). The father was killed at the scene, while his son was critically ill in hospital, reported by Reuters.
Australian police said the Hanukkah event was attended by about 1,000 people. As a result of the shooting, 40 people are still being treated, including two police officers.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who visited the scene on Monday, called the attack a "dark moment for our nation."
PM Albanese also said police and security agencies were thoroughly investigating the motive behind the attack.
"What we saw yesterday was pure criminal action, an act of anti-Semitism, an act of terrorism on our shores in an iconic Australian location," PM Albanese said.
"The Jewish community is hurt today. Today, all Australians embrace them and say, we are with you. We will do whatever it takes to eradicate anti-Semitism. It is a scourge, and we will eradicate it together," said PM Albanese.
He added that a number of world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, had contacted him and he thanked them for their solidarity.
