JAKARTA Environmental observer, Mahawan Karunisa assessed that President Prabowo Subianto's administration cannot be blamed entirely on environmental damage that is said to be the cause of disasters in Sumatra.

"Regarding who is responsible, the current and so on minister, it cannot be seen like that," he said, Sunday, December 7.

According to him, although the government is actually responsible for environmental damage, the responsibility is not only carried by the government, but also by the private sector and the community. Therefore, the current government must be more stringent in supervising policies related to the environment.

One of them is by stopping illegal logging (illegal logging) and auditing companies involved in legal or illegal logging. Then, the government must also return nature through restoration.

"udits are important related to the performance of the company, especially if in forestry, forestry permits, they must be audited whether they comply with applicable regulations," added Mahawan.

Dia menyatakan, persoalan pebalakan liar alias illegal logging sudah terjadi sejak puluhan tahun lalu atau sejak Orde Baru.

Bahkan, izin atas pembalakan liar disebut kerap dijual kepada pihak-pihak swasta tidak bertanggung jawab.

Imbasnya, pembalakan liar terus terjadi sehingga tidak ada pengawasan secara ketat dari pihak berwenang.

“Memang demikian kenyataannya. Ada proses korupsi sumber daya alam yang terjadi sejak zaman Orde Baru itu ya, yang sangat masif terjadi,” ujar Mahawan.

He stated that the problem of illegal logging had occurred since decades ago or since the New Order.

In fact, permits for illegal logging are said to often be sold to irresponsible private parties.

As a result, illegal logging continues so that there is no strict supervision from the authorities.

"Indeed, this is the reality. There is a process of corruption of natural resources that has occurred since the New Order era, yes, which is very massive," said Mahawan.
