JAKARTA PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol is encouraged to accelerate the rejuvenation of recreational assets to remain competitive amid increasing tourism options in Jakarta.
Deputy Chairman of Commission B of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Wahyu Dewanto, assessed that facilities that have been operating for a long time need to get a new touch so that visitors' interest does not decrease. One of the main highlights is the Gondola Ancol cable car which is considered not to have experienced significant changes since it first operated.
"Cable cars from the beginning until now just survive. Why isn't a study or being extended to JIS," Wahyu said in Jakarta, Thursday, December 4.
Wahyu suggested that the cable car route be extended to the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) which is located on the south side of the Ancol area. According to him, the project can become a new icon if developed creatively and is connected to other supporting areas.
Wahyu gave an example of the development of recreational facilities in Singapore as a comparison. He called the Mount Faber cable car model that crosses the toll road as proof that tourism transportation innovation can be done with a bolder concept.
"If possible, I am very proud. Ancol does not need to go out of funds. It has been in collaboration with Astra for decades," said Wahyu.
He emphasized that without a facility update, Ancol has the potential to lose competitiveness, especially with the development of the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area, which in recent years has become one of the favorite destinations for Jabodetabek residents.
"Innovations are needed. Our rival is PIK," said Wahyu.

Gondola Ancol itself is the first cable car in Indonesia. This recreational facility uses computerization-based control systems and security technology which became standard during its inauguration on December 20, 2003 by Governor Sutiyoso.
Until now, the Gondola is still operating in the Taman Impian Jaya Ancol area, but has not experienced a significant route or update for more than two decades.
