PM Takaichi Promises To Accelerate Fukushima Reconstruction Efforts

JAKARTA - Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday pledged to accelerate government efforts in reconstruction in Fukushima Prefecture on his first visit to the region devastated by the earthquake and nuclear disaster in 2011.

"With the determination that all of my cabinet ministers are 'ministers of reconstruction', we will further accelerate our efforts," he told reporters, adding the government would fulfill its responsibilities towards Fukushima "until it's finished," Kyodo News reported. (2/12).

PLTN Fukushima Daiichi in March 2011 experienced a cancellation of several reactors due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami, spewing large amounts of radioactive material into the air and resulting in contamination of the surrounding soil.

Takaichi, who became prime minister in October, received a briefing at the PLTN from Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. regarding the development of decommissioning and reviewing temporary storage facilities for land taken during the decontamination effort.

With the government's legal obligation to move land waste outside Fukushima Prefecture by March 2045 at the latest, PM Takaichi said his government would continue the roadmap of its predecessor, Shigeru Ishiba, by clarifying the steps towards the final candidate election starting in 2030.

To promote its utilization, land taken from Fukushima has been used in the front yard of the prime minister's office since July and in a stretch of flowers outside government ministries since September.
