The Langkat DPRD Asks For Evaluation And Dismissal Of The Head Of BPBD After It Is Failed To Handle Large Floods

Langkat Strong criticism was conveyed by a member of the Langkat DPRD, Matthew Diemas Basanta, regarding the slow response of the Langkat Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in dealing with major floods that hit 15 sub-districts at the end of November 2025. Matthew asked for the performance of the Head of BPBD to be evaluated immediately and consider removing from office.

Matthew assessed that the Langkat BPBD was not alert when people needed help. In fact, the BPBD emergency hotline is said to be unreachable when residents are trapped in the flood.

We assess that the performance of BPBD Langkat is very slow. When people are trapped in the flood, the emergency hotline number is not available. This is concerning, because people need fast access," said Matthew, Tuesday (2/12/2025).

Number Not Lifted And Minimum Equipment

Matthew also revealed his personal experience when trying to contact the Head of BPBD Langkat to request field reports.

"I called the Head of BPBD twice. The number was active, but it was not picked up. In disaster conditions, this attitude cannot be tolerated," he said.

In addition to communication problems, Matthew highlighted the lack of flood management facilities. BPBD is said to only provide six rubber boats to handle dozens of flood points.

"With such a disaster coverage, six rubber boats are clearly not enough. This is proof that BPBD is not ready to face an emergency," he said.

Looted Allegedly Due To Late Assistance

Matthew also mentioned the occurrence of looting in the Tanjung Pura area which according to him was the impact of delays in the distribution of aid.

"The imprisonment occurred because the aid came too late. This shows the failure of BPBD coordination," he said.

Based on the findings and reports of residents, Matthew emphasized that the Head of BPBD Langkat Regency must be seriously evaluated, even removed if needed.

"This is not a matter of politics, this is a matter of people's lives and safety. If you are unable to carry out your duties, it is better to resign," he concluded.
