JAKARTA - Egypt is running a training program for hundreds of Palestinian police candidates. They will later be stationed in postwar security forces in Gaza.
This was conveyed by Palestinian officials to AFP who asked for their identities to be kept secret for security reasons on Sunday, November 30.
He explained that the first group of more than 500 Palestinian police candidates had undergone training in two different sessions in Cairo, starting March for two months, then others starting in September 2025. Furthermore, hundreds of other candidates will come for training.
He said all Palestinian police candidates were from and would be stationed in the Gaza Strip. Regarding the wage system or salaries will be distributed by the Palestinian Authority, based in Ramallah, the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
"I am very happy with this training. We want to end the war and aggression permanently, and we are excited to serve our country and fellow citizens," a 26-year-old Palestinian police candidate said.
He hopes that prospective police officers trained and placed as security forces in postwar Gaza will be "independent, loyal only to Palestine, and not subject to alliances or external destinations."
The training also highlights the role of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) as the only legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and emphasizes the importance of "protecting dreams of creating" a fully sovereign and independent Palestinian state.
A senior security official from the Palestinian Authority confirmed that Pelestina President Mahmud Abbas had instructed Interior Minister Ziad Hab Al-Reeh to coordinate with Egypt regarding the training.
In Egyptian-sponsored peace negotiations at the end of 2024, Palestinian movements included two main movements, Abbas's Hamas and Fatah agreed to around 10,000 prospective Gaza guard police officers.
Egypt will train half of them, while the other 5,000 come from police in Gaza, which has been under Hamas control since the militant group seized power there in 2007.
Under the agreement, the security forces will be overseen by a technocrat committee approved by Palestinian movements.
A senior Hamas official confirmed to AFP that the measures support "tails regarding the security and management of the Gaza Strip" that have been agreed upon during the negotiations.
