The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources deployed a special team consisting of a volcano expert and a drone operational team from the Yogyakarta Center for Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development (BPPTKG) to monitor and map the current conditions of Mount Semeru.

Head of PVMBG Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Pelatin Hadi Wijaya said, strengthening the monitoring team in the field is very necessary considering the status of Mount Semeru, which is currently the only volcano with the status of Alert (Level 4) in Indonesia.

"Today our team of experts is already in the field. There are eight people, consisting of four experts in Volcanology Center Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) and four drones from the BPPTKG," said Hadi at the PVMBG building in Bandung, Friday, November 21.

The use of drone technology is considered crucial to see crater openings, piles of materials, and potential cold lava flow lines that are difficult to reach by ground visual observations.

In addition to technology support, PVMBG also assisted two senior volcanic observers who used to work on Mount Ijen and Mount Bromo.

"We hope that this additional personnel can strengthen our friends at the Semeru Volcano Observation Post in providing real time and proper education to the public," he said.

Hadi revealed that currently his party is monitoring 69 active volcanoes in real time throughout Indonesia.

In addition to Semeru which is at Level 4 (Alert), there are also two Level 3 Mounts (Alert), namely Mount Lewotobi and Mount Merapi, while 21 mountains have Alert status (Level 2), and the rest are in normal positions.
