JAKARTA - The Regency Government (Pemkab) of South Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) in South Sumatra (Sumsel), supports the translocation or transfer of wild elephants to new habitat pockets in the Gunung Raya Wildlife Sanctuary to prevent conflicts with humans.
South OKU Regent Abusama said the handling of the Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) which entered residential areas in Buay Pemca and Buana Pemca sub-districts some time ago became a serious concern for his staff.
Conflicts between humans and protected animals often occur, he said, such as recently a herd of wild elephants entered residential areas in Buay Pemca and Buana Pemca sub-districts, causing unrest for people in the area.
"The conflict of wild elephants and residents that occurred some time ago caused unrest for the community," he said in Muaradua, Tuesday, as reported by Antara.
As a medium-term solution, his party together with the South Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) proposed accelerating the translocation of five individual Sumatran Elephants into new habitat pockets in the Gunung Raya Wildlife Sanctuary, South OKU Regency.
The South OKU Regency Government also asked for support from the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) so that the translocation process can be realized in December 2025.
This step is expected to be able to restore a sense of security for the community, as well as preserve the Sumatran elephant as a protected animal.
The Regent hopes that the collaboration between the central government and the BKSDA will be further strengthened to ensure that the handling of conflicts between humans and wildlife runs effectively and sustainably in the South OKU region.
