Ship With 12 Passengers Experienced Engine Damage In Ternate Waters

The joint SAR team conducted a search and rescue operation for KM Jeni Jaya 05 to experience engine failure in Batang Dua Waters, Ternate City carrying 12 passengers while operating in the waters between Batang Dua Island and Ternate City.

Head of the Ternate SAR Office, Iwan Ramdani, explained that after receiving the report, his party immediately coordinated with a number of related agencies. In addition, Basarnas also contacted the ship owner to dig up additional information.

The report was received by the Ternate Search and Rescue Office (Basarnas) of Jeandry Wowiling, the family of one of the victims, who was concerned about the fate of the entire crew.

"Therefore, Ternate SAR Com Center officers managed to communicate with the KM Jeni Jaya 05 crew via the Marine Channel 10 Radio. From these communications, it is known that the ship is currently about 20 miles from Mayau Island, Batang Dua District," he said in Ternate, Antara, Monday, November 17.

In fact, the crew also said that they were trying to repair the ship's engine and chose to stay on the ship while waiting for help, because they did not want to leave their assets.

He said after an internal briefing, the Ternate SAR Office Rescue Team was immediately dispatched to a location suspected of being the place where the ship was located. The team's movement process uses KN SAR 237 Pandudewanata which is assigned to carry out supervision and escort of private ships assigned to withdraw KM Jeni Jaya 05 to the nearest island.

According to preliminary reports, the ship's position is estimated to be at coordinates 1°32'27.42" N / 126°42'36.36" E, around 39.31 nautical miles with a radian of 300.98$ from the Ternate SAR Office. This information forms the initial basis for the search operation.

KM Jeni Jaya 05 is known to depart from Bitung on November 15, 2025 at around 07.45 WIT to West Halmahera waters to look for fish. The ship that was headed by Capt. Ivan Wenas was carrying 11 other crew members (ABK).

However, on November 16, 2025 at 02.10 WIT, while looking for fishing spots, the ship suddenly experienced engine failure. This condition makes the ship adrift in Batang Dua waters because it cannot maneuver.

Luckily, the ship later found a FAD, and the crew decided to attach KM Jeni Jaya 05 to the FAD to prevent the ship from sinking further. After that, the crew contacted the family to ask for help and the report was forwarded to the Ternate Basarnas Office.

Until the official report was released, the joint team was still conducting measurable monitoring and evacuation efforts to ensure the safety of the entire crew.
