JAKARTA - Lebanese president has asked his foreign minister to file a complaint against Israel over the construction of a wall in Lebanese territory.

A statement released by President Joseph Aoun's office said he had asked foreign ministers to include a statement of complaint issued by the United Nations peacekeeping force (UNIFIL) deployed along the border with Israel.

On Friday, UNIFIL declared Israeli soldiers to have built a wall in the southwest of Yaroun village in Lebanon.

UNIFIL stated the wall crossed the border line, so that more than 4,000 square meters (43,000 square feet) of Lebanese territory "cannot be accessed by the Lebanese people."

UNIFIL said it had informed Israeli soldiers of its findings and asked them to dismantle the wall.

The wall construction violated UN Security Council resolution that ended Israel-Hezbollah's 14-month war with a US-brokered ceasefire reached in November last year. UNIFIL said the wall violated Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As reported by the Associated Press, Monday, November 17, the Israeli military said the wall, whose construction began in 2022, was part of a broader plan for reinforcements along the border.

It said that since the beginning of the war, Israeli soldiers had advanced a series of measures, including strengthening physical barriers along the northern border.

The Israeli army said it needed to be emphasized that the wall did not cross the Blue Line, a boundary between Lebanon and Israel set by the United Nations which was monitored and patroled by UNIFIL.

The Israel-Hezbollah war began when Hezbollah began firing rockets across the border on October 8, 2023, a day after a deadly Hamas-led attack on southern Israel sparked war in Gaza.

Israel responded with shootings and airstrikes in Lebanon, and both sides engaged in an escalating conflict that became a massive war by the end of September 2024.
