JAKARTA - Palestinians displaced in Gaza woke up on Friday morning and found their tents submerged by floods as high as a few centimeters.
Heavy rain overnight made the shelters and their belongings soaking wet without any way to dry them.
Officials in Gaza have received " Hundreds of requests for assistance, but the resources are not there," said Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for Gaza Civil Defense.
"All shelter centers have experienced an increase in water levels of more than 10 centimeters (3.94 inches). Drowning wet mattresses, soaking wet blankets, and there is no choice left because all options have been destroyed by Israel," he said.
Paralyzed Palestinians in Gaza City told CNN the tents they occupied were obsolete, some of which collapsed due to the rain.
"We and our little children were flooded because of the rain," said Raed Al-Alayan.
"Our tents were flooded. There was no roof to protect us from the rain," he continued.
Storms are common in Gaza today, but with hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced from permanent shelters, normal rainfall can overwhelm residents and worsen already concerning conditions.
