JAKARTA - The Donald Trump administration has lifted the ban on drilling and mining in Alaska.
US State Department officials called the decision a "big step in unlocking energy potential" in the region, although environmental activists fear it will damage the vast natural area of the US-largest state.
"By revoking the 2024 rules, we are following the directives set by President (Donald) Trump to unlock Alaska's energy potential, create jobs for people in North Slope, and strengthen American energy resilience," said Domestic Minister Doug Burgum.
Drilling and mining in Alaska is limited by US President Joe Biden, who served between Trump's first and second periods, to protect wildlife in the National Oil Reserve area.
"By overturning 2024 rules, the Department is taking action to amplify America's Energy Domination and reduce its dependence on foreign oil," the department said in a statement.
It said Alaskans had asked the government to "return" the framework of previous regulations to allow drilling and mining.
