GRESIK - Residents affected by flooding caused by the overflowing tributary of the Lamong River in Gresik Regency, East Java, have begun being evacuated. The evacuation process is focusing on vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and people with disabilities.

One of the evacuation sites is in Menganti District, Gresik, which has been inundated for the past three days, on Thursday, November 13th.

Menganti District Head Bagus Arif Jauhari hopes the weather will improve soon so the flow of the Lamong River can return to normal. "Some want to be evacuated, while others are staying at home. We hope the weather remains clear so the water can recede quickly," said Bagus.

According to Bagus, residents are being evacuated to the local village hall or to refugee camps set up by the Gresik Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). However, some residents are still reluctant to be evacuated, feeling more comfortable staying in their homes.

"Most residents don't want to be evacuated. They are still occupying parts of their homes that are not flooded, staying with neighbors on higher ground, or staying with relatives," he explained.

To date, approximately five residents have agreed to be evacuated. Meanwhile, three villages in Menganti District were severely affected by the overflowing Lamong River.

Several neighborhood roads and village main roads were submerged in water reaching 30 centimeters. Furthermore, 140 hectares of rice fields and more than 100 homes were inundated.

"Of the 22 villages in Menganti District, approximately three were severely affected by the flooding," said Bagus.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Gresik Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Sukardi, stated that evacuations were also carried out in other areas affected by the flood, such as Glindah Village, Kedamean District.

"We also provide daily food needs through public kitchens for affected residents," concluded Sukardi.
