Banggar DPR Values Redenomination Of Rupiah Not Urgent: Urgency Is Not, Future Needs Perhaps Yes

Chairman of the DPR RI Budget Agency (Banggar) Said Abdullah assessed that the government's plan to change the price or redenomination of the rupiah has not become an urgent need, in the near future. According to him, this policy requires a long preparation time, including intensive socialization to the community.

"The urgency is not. At the level of future needs, maybe yes. Therefore, if it is 2027, the intensive government in 2026 will conduct socialization to the public," said Said at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, November 11.

"(Then) have the same understanding, only internal government preparation as well, then the discussion of the law can be carried out, the discussion will only be held in 2027," he continued.

According to Said, the socialization period is needed so that people understand that redenomination is different from sanering or cutting the value of money. He also assessed that public misunderstanding at this stage could cause unrest and polemics in the community.

"It's very different from sanering. In fact, it needs socialization. Don't let redenomination be the same as for the community, cutting money. Well, that's very dangerous. So it really needs to be socialized. Be careful at that level. This is not a cut at all," the PDIP legislator urged from the East Java XI electoral district.

According to Said, the socialization period for rupiah redenomination for one year is actually enough. What takes a long time, he said, is the process of implementing the full redenomination after the new law is issued.

"Seven years of redenomination when the law was issued. But if the socialization, one year is full, God willing, it can be done," he said.

Furthermore, Said reminded that before this policy is implemented, the government must ensure economic, social and political stability, as well as technical readiness in the field. If not, said Said, the government should not be reckless.

"Redenomination requires prerequisites. The first is to ensure the stability of our economic growth, social aspects, the political aspect. Then technically, is the government ready? If all of that is not done, don't try to redenominate it," he concluded.

Previously, the Ministry of Finance planned to draft four new Draft Laws (RUU) in the near future, one of which was a bill on Changes in Rupiah Prices or Redenomination.

This plan is stated in the Minister of Finance Regulation (PMK) Number 70 of 2025 concerning the Strategic Plan (Renstra) of the Ministry of Finance 2025'2029.

The PMK was issued on October 10, 2025 and took effect after being promulgated on November 3, 2025.

The urgency of formation, economic efficiency can be achieved through increasing national competitiveness, citing the regulation, Friday, November 7.

In addition, the formation of the Redenomination Bill is also considered important to maintain the continuity of national economic growth, maintain the stability of the rupiah exchange rate as a form of protection against people's purchasing power, and strengthen the credibility of the rupiah currency.

The bill on Changes in Rupiah Prices is included in the category of advanced bills targeted for completion in 2027, with the Directorate General of Treasury (DJPb) of the Ministry of Finance as the main person in charge.
