MUI: Pak Harto, Pak Habibi And Gus Dur Deserve To Be Heroes

JAKARTA - MUI Chairman for Fatwa Asrorun Niam Sholeh stated that every former president who is no longer worthy of being appointed as a national hero, considering the struggles and sacrifices they have made while leading the country.

Every time there are heroes. We must respect the struggles of the nation's leaders, including the former Presidents who have led Indonesia. They are heroes to the Indonesian nation. Pak Karno, Pak Harto, Pak Habibi, and Gus Dur, are the nation's leaders who deserve to be heroes," Niam said in a statement quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, November 5.

Niam invites the Indonesian people to unite, support each other, and strengthen to build the nation together.

For him, a great nation is a nation that respects its heroes, including the leaders of a country that has dedicated its life to the nation and state.

The public should not hold grudges and bring up the ugliness of the previous leaders. Because no one is perfect.

"And the proposed heroes from various backgrounds show President Prabowo's statesmanship to embrace and build harmony and togetherness," he said.

In Islam, it is ordered to remember the services and kindness of those who have died, especially those who are leaders who have actually contributed and planted goodness for the nation, Kiai Niam.

Previously, Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board Ahmad Fahrur Rozi (Gus Fahrur) expressed his support for the proposal of the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia to the Dewan Degree for establishing Suharto and Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) as National Heroes.

According to Gus Fahrur, the Indonesian people need to learn from the past both from their kindness and shortcomings to build a wiser and more civilized future.

"In the tradition of Islamic science, there are important rules: Al-muhafazhah ala al-qadim ash-shalih wal akhdzu bil jadid al-ashlah, take good care of the old one, and take a new one better," said Gus Fahrur.

Gus Fahrur assessed that both Suharto and Gus Dur had a major contribution to the nation in two different historical phases.
