JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government carries out weather modification operations (OMC) to anticipate the potential for extreme weather that can trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides. This operation was held on November 5'10, 2025 and was centered at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, East Jakarta.

Head of DKI Jakarta BPBD Isnawa Adji said this activity was carried out as an anticipatory step after the results of the analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) showed the potential for increasing rainfall in Jakarta and its surroundings.

"This weather modification operation is an anticipatory step by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to reduce the potential for extreme rainfall which can cause inundation, flooding, and landslides," Isnawa said in his statement, Wednesday, November 5.

Weather modification operations were carried out using the Casa A-2114 aircraft belonging to the Indonesian Air Force. The flights were carried out twice a day, at 11.30 WIB and 14.30 WIB, respectively, with the air crew Lettu Pnb Bintang, Kpt Pnb Fajar, and Letda Pnb Krisna.

"This cross-institutional collaboration is part of a hydrometeorological disaster mitigation strategy ahead of the peak of the rainy season," he said.

The cloud seeding is carried out in the Pandeglang area, the southwestern waters of Pandeglang, to the western waters of Serang Regency, at an altitude of between 8,000 and 10,000 feet. About 1,600 kilograms of higroscopic or salt (NaCl) material is used in this operation.

Based on field observations, the team detected Stratocumulus clouds in the Lebak area to the west coast of Banten. In the area, Cumulus clouds began to grow, which is the main target of seeding. Spraying of the Semai material is carried out intensively at an altitude of about 10,000 feet.

In addition, the team also noted a mild precipitation in the western Pandeglang area, indicating that the Semai material succeeded in triggering the growth of rain clouds in the intended area.

Isnawa added that the implementation of OMC will continue to adjust to the daily atmospheric conditions monitored by the BMKG so that the matching is more effective. This step is expected to unravel the potential for heavy rain in the mainland Jakarta area.

"We continue to monitor the development of weather dynamics with BMKG and the Indonesian Air Force. The goal is that rainfall is not concentrated in mainland Jakarta, but can be unraveled in the surrounding waters, so that the risk of flooding can be reduced," added Isnawa.
