Dutch Election, Rob Jetten Has The Opportunity To Become The First And Youngest Gay Prime Minister

JAKARTA - Rob Jetten, a 38-year-old young politician, has the opportunity to make history as the first and youngest gay prime minister in the Netherlands. His party, D66 (Democrat 66), leads the provisional results of the national vote, ahead of the Freedom Party (PVV) led by Geert Wilders.

According to Dutch news agency ANP, until the evening of October 31, 2025, D66 was ahead with a difference of 14,081 votes over PVV. Both parties are estimated to win around 26 seats out of a total of 150 parliamentary seats.

ANP calls this result a dramatic victory for Jetten, which is considered difficult to match by its political opponents. The official election results will be announced by the Dutch Election Council on November 7, 2025. However, Jetten has declared victory on the grounds that the people need immediate political certainty.

"The Dutch people demand that we work immediately," said Rob Jetten.

Jetten assessed that the message of optimism and the positive campaign he carried was the key to D66's victory. He also satirized the populist political style of Geert Wilders, who is known to be anti-Islamic and anti-immigration.

"We have shown Europe and the world that the populist movement can be defeated with a positive message," Jetten said.

The former Dutch defense minister and member of D66 Kajsa Ollongren, praised Jetten as one of the most talented politicians in the country.

"I believe if we win, he will unite the country and reverse the negative spiral created by Wilders," he said.

Meanwhile, Geert Wilders accused Jetten too quickly of declaring victory. "The General Election Commission decided, not ANP. It's arrogant if you don't wait," Wilders wrote on platform X.

If officially elected, Rob Jetten will become the youngest and first gay prime minister in Dutch history. Even so, his sexual orientation is said to have not played a major role in his political campaign.

The Netherlands is known as the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage 25 years ago and has strong protection against LGBT+ rights.

Outside of politics, Jetten is known to the public for its love story with Argentine hockey athlete Nicolas Keenan which went viral on TikTok in 2021. The two got engaged and planned to get married in August 2026.

In his campaign, Jetten carries a message of unity and cross-party cooperation. He called for politicians to stop accelerating divisions and focus on solving national problems collectively.
