JAKARTA - Heavy rains and floods in Vietnam killed 10 people and caused five people to disappear.

Reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, October 29, the rain was very heavy due to the confluence of cold winds and tropical winds that have hit central Vietnam since October 23, with several areas being showered by more than 1,000 millimeters of rain.

More than 7,000 households, or about 21,000 people, have been evacuated, and a hydroelectric reservoir is trying to reduce flooding downstream.

In the city of Da Nang, six people were killed, 19 injured, and four residents are still missing.

Floods submerged 29 villages downstream of the Vu Gia'Thu Bon watershed, while 10 mountainous villages were cut off due to landslides.

In Hue, one person drowned, and a 5 year old girl went missing in the flood. Thirty two of the city's 40 villages are still flooded.

The province of Quang Ngai reported three deaths, with more than 120 landslides blocking the highway and trapping vehicles.

Local and military governments were deployed for rescue operations, but heavy rains have delayed their operations.

The National Hydro-Meteorology Forecast Center estimates heavy rains will fall until Thursday night.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Wednesday chaired an emergency meeting to direct flood and recovery response efforts.
