JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is collaborating with the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) to improve the quality of workers from Indonesia who work abroad, especially those from Jakarta.
The signing of a memorandum of understanding was carried out by the Minister of Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers Mukhtarudin and the Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung at DKI Jakarta City Hall.
Mukhtarudin said this collaboration was a follow-up to the agreement between BP2MI and the Ministry of Home Affairs. DKI Jakarta became the first area to continue the collaboration at the local government level.
"We are strengthening synergies in handling migrant workers from upstream to downstream. DKI has complete facilities to increase HR capacity, so we develop so that Indonesian migrant workers are not only low skills, but also medium-high skills," said Mukhtarudin at DKI Jakarta City Hall, Wednesday, October 29.
He explained that foreign workers' requests have now begun to shift to medium and high sectors such as the hotel industry, welding techniques, and other professional fields. Therefore, BP2MI wants to ensure that training and placement are carried out safely and according to the standards of the destination country.
Mukhtarudin added that in the SISKOP2MI system, more than 4,000 DKI residents worked abroad throughout 2023-2025. However, he highlighted that there were still cases of illegal placement, including a number of Jakarta residents who worked unofficially in Cambodia.
"Camboja is not the destination country for official placement. So if someone goes there, it must be unprocedural. But as a government, we are still here to repatriate and protect them. 101 Indonesian citizens have been sent home from there," he said.

Meanwhile, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung revealed that the local government is preparing its citizens to compete in the global work market. He said collaboration with BP2MI would focus on increasing the capacity and training of the workforce in the field in accordance with the needs of the destination country.
"For Jakarta, it is because we want to prepare for placement in places that are indeed for middle-ups, especially for example as welders, hospitality, and so on," said Pramono.
Furthermore, Pramono added, local governments will encourage cooperation with the private sector and training institutions to expand skills improvement programs, especially in the field of medium industry and services.
"We will focus on placing in middle-up countries such as Korea, Japan, Western Europe and Eastern Europe. We also discussed with the Minister about job opportunities in the hospitality, manufacturing and technology sectors. This is all so that our workforce can advance to class," he added.
