Mother And Child Killer In Bengkulu Curup Sentenced To Death

JAKARTA - The panel of judges at the Curup Class IB District Court, Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu, sentenced Gunawan (44) to death, the perpetrator of the murder of a mother and child.

"The defendant was proven to have violated Article 340 of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 64 of the Criminal Code concerning premeditated murder," said Chief Justice of the Class IB District Court Curup Mantiko Sumandadilansir ANTARA, Tuesday, October 28.

He explained that the defendant Gunawan with intent and planning had sadisticly killed another person's life.

The death sentence handed down by the panel of judges, he said, was because nothing could ease the sentence of the defendant. On the other hand, there are several aggravating points such as acts committed against more than one person, even the status of his wife and children. Then carried out in a sadistic andjective manner.

Meanwhile, the other defendant tried to run away after committing his actions, as well as trying to complicate the disclosure of the case, and finally his actions had caused deep injuries and condolences to the victim's family and there was no peace between the defendant and the victim's family.

After passing a verdict in the form of the death penalty, the panel of judges at the Curup District Court gave the defendant one week to think about whether to accept or file an appeal.

The verdict handed down by the panel of judges at the Curup District Court itself was heavier than the demands of the Prosecutor's Office, Rejang Lebong, who demanded that the defendant Gunawan be sentenced to life in prison. However, after considering the trial pacts, the panel of judges argued that none of the elements could ease the defendant's actions.

Previously, investigators from the Rejang Lebong Police stated that the murder case committed by the defendant Gunawan against his wife and stepdaughter was revealed after the victim's eldest son (the late Euis) came to his rented house which is located at RT 01 / RW 01 Kesambe Baru Village, East Curup District, on May 2, 2025 at around 13.00 WIB. Because he found a foul smell from inside the house, he reported it to the police.

The defendant, after committing the murder on April 30, 2025, at around 06.30 WIB, immediately fled and took his wife's motorbike, then sold it in the area of North Musi Rawas Regency, South Sumatra. The defendant was arrested on May 7, 2025 in the Karawang area, West Java Province.
