In the journal of LEMIGAS, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources explains that the use of DME has actually been common. One of the countries that uses DME as fuel is CHina. The country uses DME as stove fuel. They then built a DME facility in 1995 in Shaanxi with a capacity of 500 tons/year.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the DME factory only has a capacity of 100 tons/year. The results of the DME production are then used for several things, one of which is used in the aerosol industry, not as fuel.

The choice of DME as a substitute fuel for LPG is not without reason. There are several advantages that can be offered by DME, namely as follows.

DME is said to be a more environmentally friendly fuel. This can happen because the fuel is clean of sulfur and nitrogen elements. That way the resulting emissions are lower and less corrosive.

DME production is also easier to update because it is produced from various sources, for example from natural gas, coal processing, to biomass.

One of the advantages of using DME is that the infrastructure used can use LPG infrastructure. That way the renewal of supporting infrastructure does not need to be done on a large scale.

Another advantage of DME is that the quality of the flame is better than the LPG resulting flames. This flame DME is bluer so the burning is faster than LPG.

The government is indeed working on the discourse of replacing LPG to DME. This is done in order to reduce public dependence on LPG gas. In this way, LPG imports are expected to be more suppressed in the future.

To support the discourse on replacing LPG to DME, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia said that the government will soon work on the coal downstream project to Dimethyl Ether (DME). The project will be carried out in stages starting in early 2026.

"Now we have submitted the results of the study to Danantara and God willing, at the beginning of the year or at the end of this year we can execute it gradually," Bahlil explained at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Monday, October 27.
