PeKANBARU Center for Natural Resources Conservation (BBKSDA) Riau Province is following up on reports of residents being attacked by two Sumatran tigers in Nunusan Hamlet, Rantau Langsat Village, Batang Gansal District, Indragiri Hulu Regency (Inhu).
Head of the Technical Division of BBKSDA Riau, Ujang Holisidin, said the victim named Butet (27) suffered injuries to his left ankle and right knee as a result of the attack. The incident occurred on Monday, October 20 in the traditional zone of the Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park (TNBT) area.
"The Riau BBKSDA team has coordinated with the Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park Office as the regional manager, and jointly visited victims and their families," said Ujang in Pekanbaru, Antara, Wednesday, October 22.
According to the information received, the incident began when the victim was harvesting water to patch the boat. Before being attacked, the victim heard the sound of a tiger, but ignored it because he was used to doing activities in the forest.
The victim was attacked by two Sumatran tigers at once. Adult tiger attacks the left ankle, while its child attacks the victim's right knee," said Ujang.
He suspected the attack occurred because an adult female tiger was teaching her cubs to hunt.
"It is suspected that the adult Sumatran tiger is training its cubs to hunt," said Ujang.
Luckily, the victim managed to save himself after hitting the tiger cub in the face until it bounced. Seeing this, the tiger mother released her grip, allowing the victim to escape.
After the incident, the victim walked to the hamlet and was assisted by residents to Rantau Langsat Village. From there, the victim was taken to the Cyberida Health Center, then referred to the Indrasari Rengat Hospital for intensive care.
