CIREBON - Cirebon City Resort Police (Polres), West Java, confirmed that the theft of shoes at the At-Taqwa Grand Mosque by the perpetrator with the initials ASN, the son of former Cirebon Mayor Nashrudin Azis, had been resolved through the restorative justice route.
Cirebon City Police Chief AKBP Eko Iskandar said the case ended peacefully, after the perpetrator and the victim agreed to settle it amicably.
"For the case of the theft of shoes at the At-Taqwa Mosque, the perpetrator with the initials ASN has now been resolved peacefully," said Eko as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, October 10.
He said the mediation process was carried out at the West North Police (Utbar) Cirebon City Police, after the perpetrator was arrested and met with the victim.
During the meeting, he said, the perpetrator showed good faith to be responsible for his actions so that this case could be resolved properly.
The police chief said the victim felt sorry for the perpetrators who were known to be experiencing economic difficulties, so he agreed not to continue the case to legal action.
"From there it was found that there was good faith from the perpetrators, until mediation was achieved and resolved amicably," he said.
He ensured that all the stolen goods had been returned to their owners, as well as one pair of shoes that had been sold had also been replaced in the form of money.
"The stolen shoes have been returned, and the one pair that has been sold has been replaced in the form of money," he said.
Eko said the results of the investigation showed that the theft was purely for economic reasons and was the first time the perpetrator had done it.
In addition, he explained that the peace agreement between the perpetrator and the victim had been stated in an official agreement which became the basis for resolving cases through the restorative justice route.
The police chief stated that the value of the stolen goods was relatively small, namely under Rp. 1 million, so that it met the completion criteria through this mechanism.
He emphasized that this restorative justice step was taken not because the perpetrator was the son of a former official, but was taken based on social aspects.
"Considering this is of the will of both parties, so we prioritize aspects of legal benefit," he said.
Previously, the shoe theft occurred in the At-Taqwa Grand Mosque area, Cirebon City, on Monday (6/10), which was carried out by the perpetrator with the initials ASN.
ASN was arrested by mosque security officers, after his face was caught on CCTV cameras while stealing branded shoes belonging to residents who were praying.
The perpetrator admitted that some of the stolen shoes had been sold, while the rest were still stored at home.
