During The COVID-19 Pandemic, Crime In The Capital Increases By 10 Percent

JAKARTA - The spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia has been going on for more than one month. This pandemic has an impact on many things, including an increase in crime.

Based on police data, the crime rate has increased during this time. It is suspected that this was influenced by the application of the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) regulation which made conditions in some areas empty of activity and exploited by criminals.

Kapolda Metro Jaya Inspector General Nana Sudjana said the increase in crime was more about street crimes. The calculation of the increase is based on a comparison with the number of crimes in the previous month.

"There is an increase of 10 percent and there are indeed more cases. These include theft and violence, weighted theft, then corruption and drug cases and another problem of fraud," said Nana in Jakarta, Monday, April 27.

Examples of an increase in the number of crimes, including 17 cases of minimarket burglary in one month. A total of 13 cases from all that were successfully revealed.

"The motives are various, the majority have economic motives. The second is because among them are because of the need for drugs," said Nana.

The majority of minimarket burglars are recidivists in various cases. From existing data, only a few of them are new players.

It is recorded that almost 80 percent of the perpetrators of crimes are ex-convicts or who belong to the street crime group.

"About 70 to 80 percent are recidivists," said Nana.

In addition, the Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Yusri Yunus, said that dozens of people were suspects of the dozens of cases of burglary at this minimarket. Some of them were shot for resisting when they were arrested.

"We secure 20 suspects, who succeeded in taking firm, measured action by about two people. So 18 people are still in the process," said Yusri.
