JAKARTA - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the agreement to secure a ceasefire and release of hostages in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, saying the deal was a path to determining the fate of the Palestinian people themselves.
"I urge all parties to take advantage of this important opportunity to build a credible political path in the future," Secretary General Guterres said in a press statement.
"A path to the end of the occupation, the recognition of the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people, and the achievement of a two-state solution," he said.
The UN Secretary-General further urged full and sustainable access to humanitarian workers in Gaza, where Israeli bombings after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 have created a humanitarian crisis and displaced millions.
"The United Nations is ready to provide its full support," said Secretary General Guterres.
"We and our partners are ready to move, now." he continued.
"We have expertise, distribution networks, and community relations that are ready to act. Assistance is available, and our team is on standby," he added.
Secretary General Guterres on the occasion praised the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey for their role in this " much-needed breakthrough" and called for a permanent ceasefire to be confirmed.
Hamas-led attacks in 2023 in southern Israel killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies. Israel says of the 251 people held hostage during the attack, 48 remain, 20 of whom are still alive.
Yesterday, medical sources in Gaza confirmed the death toll from Palestine since it has reached 67,194 people, while injured to 169,890 people, quoted from WAFA.
