JAKARTA - Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkum) Supratman Andi Agtas said that copyright to journalistic works would be one of the important points included in the revision of the Law (UU) on Copyright which is currently being discussed in the DPR RI.
According to Supratman, this provision is in line with the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on Publisher Rights which provides protection against the economic rights of journalistic works.
"So later we will think about the copyright laws that we will include later," Supratman said in a discussion in Jakarta, Antara, Wednesday, October 8.
He emphasized that every party that uses other people's works and benefits from the work is obliged to pay royalties.
The government, he continued, has an obligation to protect intellectual property, because every work, both in the arts, business, and journalistic fields, contains economic value.
"Just as friends in the business world also have intellectual property value in the form of brands, it must be respected because it has economic value," said Supratman.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of the Press Council Totok Suryanto assessed that the government's move to incorporate the copyright of journalistic works into the revision of the Copyright Law was an important breakthrough.
According to Totok, the world of journalism is currently facing many problems, including the practice of quoting journalistic works without proper awards, especially for investigative and exclusive works.
"So far, journalistic work has not received the proper award. Efforts to ask for recognition or compensation from large platforms are often ignored," said Totok.
He added that the Presidential Decree on Publisher Rights, which has been in effect for about a year, has not been running optimally to guarantee appreciation for journalistic works.
"So it would be extraordinary to enter the law, so it will be legal later if fellow journalists expect droplets of sustenance from their work," he said.
