River Overflows, One Family In Aceh Besar Gets Stuck In A Garden And Can't Go Home

The evacuation process of one family in Aceh Besar who was trapped by an overflowing river in Kebun/Antara

JAKARTA - A total of 15 residents of Gampong Lamreung, Aceh Besar Regency, was trapped in the garden because of the Siron River that they crossed the overflowing water. This is due to the high rainfall on Sunday around 18.25 WIB.

"One family went to the garden by crossing the river at about 14.15 WIB, but when the river returned could not be crossed anymore", said Operations Control Center of BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency) Aceh Besar Iqbal personnel in Aceh Besar, Monday.

Group from Gampong Lamreung, Krueng Barona Jaya Subdistrict, those trapped were Ahmad Busyairi (5), Alifa Khanjia (4), Syahrijal Fitra (7), Raja (14), Raji (14), Nilta Amalia (14), Fauzia (17), Fani Febriana (28), Faisal (46), Yusriati (39), Riski Mariami (34), Wahyudi (41), Bahruddin (42), Farid (14) and Irfandi (35).

Iqbal explained that BPBD Aceh fire picket officer Sibreh Main Post received information about the incident some residents from Lamreung Village went to the garden by crossing the river at around 14.15 WIB.

According to him at the time they crossed the river the water discharge was still normal and could still be crossed by walking with the water level at that time around the knees of adults.

But by the time they were about to return from the garden at about 18.25 WIB, suddenly the discharge of river water was high and the current was heavy after the rain poured upstream of the river so that the discharge of river water instantly turned strong and murky.

"Officers immediately moved to the scene when they received information, upon arrival at the scene the officer asked the residents to calm down and not panic as officers searched the street or ways to be able to evacuate them," he said.

He said BPBD Aceh Besar firefighters who also assisted TNI personnel, police, and the community immediately hooked the rope and tied it by stretching the river as a holding place to further evacuate one by one the trapped residents.

But before being evacuated by standard operating procedures for safety and security one by one resident who will be passed first wear safety jackets.

"Alhamdulillah all the residents were successfully evacuated by officers at 23.30 WIB and all were safe", Iqbal said.
