JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is increasing the function of the Ciliwung River flow in the West Flood Canal not only as a water channel, but also as a public space that supports tourism and environmental education for the community.
Assistant for Development and Environment of the Regional Secretary of DKI Jakarta, Afan Adriansyah Idris revealed, the arrangement of the West Flood Canal will be completed by the end of next year.
Some time ago, the Governor had conducted a river crossing as part of the field evaluation. One of our focuses at this time is the arrangement of the West Flood Canal (BKB), which is targeted to be completed by the end of 2026," Afan said in his statement, Tuesday, September 30.
He emphasized that the success of river arrangement by the DKI Provincial Government cannot only rely on the government, but also requires active community involvement.
"Let's start small things, such as maintaining river cleanliness and not littering. Clean rivers are a shared responsibility," he said.
On Sunday, September 28, the DKI Provincial Government tested the use of the river as a tourist and educational space as also shown through the 2025 Cinta Lingkungan (Cilung) Parade Festival which was held in the Ciliwung River, South Jakarta.
A total of 43 boats recycled by plastic bottles sail to decorate the river flow in commemoration of World River Day.
Head of the DKI Jakarta Environment Agency (DLH), Asep Kuswanto, assessed that the festival was a means of education as well as an invitation for the public to be directly involved in protecting the river.
Through this festival, we want to show that rivers can be part of a positive and sustainable lifestyle for Jakartans. The river is part of a city civilization. Protecting it means caring for legacy for future generations," said Asep.

Asep added that the DKI Provincial Government has so far cleaned 13 large rivers, built wastewater treatment installations, and the Jakarta Sewerage System program. However, he reminded, all these efforts would not be optimal without community participation.
"We encourage residents to actively sort waste from home. This is a simple step, but it is important to reduce the burden on the Bantargebang TPA which now almost touched 60 meters, as well as cut off the flow of garbage into the river," he added.
