JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono called on BRICS member countries to encourage reform of global financial governance to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
"BRICS has an important role, not only through development financing, but also as a political platform to fight for fairer global financial governance," Sugiono said in New York, Friday.
Sugiono attended the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly High Level Week.
In his speech, he reminded that time is running low to reach the 2030 SDG Agenda, with only 15 percent of the targets on the right track while most of them missed or resigned.

Therefore, Sugiono stressed the need for BRICS to fight for fair global financial governance, challenge systemic inequality, strengthen the voices of Southern Countries Global, and encourage reform of international financial institutions.
The UN General Assembly hearing this time must raise political will and raise resources to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs. Otherwise, the promise of the 2030 Agenda will be even further away," he said.
At the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Sugiono also emphasized the importance of reform so that the organization remains agile, responsive, and relevant to the challenges of the times.
He assessed that the UN80 Initiative could be an opportunity to formulate a collective vision for the future of multilateralism, and BRICS played a role in encouraging practical reforms to strengthen the United Nations.
"BRICS has the weight and legitimacy to encourage practical reforms in order to make multilateralism more inclusive, fair and effective, so that the United Nations can carry out its main mandate," he said.
Regarding the issue of humanity, Sugiono emphasized Indonesia's deep concern over the continued illegal occupation of Palestine, while welcoming the consistency of BRICS' support for the issue.
"The path to eternal peace lies in the realization of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as the capital, according to UN resolutions," he stressed.
