JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said that BRICS has an important role in advancing the state of Palestine, appreciating the consistent support of the economic cooperation organization.
Speaking at the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting which was held on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly High-Level Week in New York, United States Friday local time, Foreign Minister Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's deep concern over the continuing illegal occupation of Palestine.
"The path to eternal peace lies in the realization of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as the capital, in accordance with UN resolutions," said Foreign Minister Sugiono, launching a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saturday, September 27.
To that end, Foreign Minister Sugiono welcomed the consistency of the support of BRICS countries on the Palestinian issue, as well as encouraging stronger collective action to ensure accountability and justice for the Palestinian people.
"As we emphasize at the Arab-Islamic Emergency Summit, our response must go beyond criticism of Israel. The Security Council must fulfill its mandate by taking firm steps to ensure accountability and prevent further atrocities," Foreign Minister Sugiono explained.
"BRICS has an important role in advancing Palestinian statehood which has long been delayed while still placing this issue at the top of the global agenda, by challenging double standards in international forums, and by building the political momentum needed to ensure justice and dignity for the Palestinian people," he said.
Foreign Minister Sugiono added that Indonesia is committed to continuing to work with BRICS in realizing a fairer, inclusive and more effective international order.
He also expressed Indonesia's full support for the chairmanship of Brazil, and was looking forward to close cooperation with India as the next Chair of the BRICS.
