JAKARTA - The United States will help secure peace after the Russian war in Ukraine ends, President Donald Trump said in an interview broadcast on Thursday.

"After the war ends, we will help secure peace. And I think that will happen in the end," President Trump told Fox News' "The Story with Martha MacCallum" program.

President Trump also admitted that helping end the war in Ukraine turned out to be more challenging than he expected and he was "very disappointed" by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"What I think will be easiest (finished) is Russia-Ukraine, because of my relationship with President Putin. So I am disappointed," said President Trump.

President Trump has repeatedly set deadlines for Moscow to reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine or face new sanctions, but the deadline has been ignored.

He warmly welcomed President Putin in what the White House called a summit in Alaska in mid-August but failed to get a major concession.

President Trump told Fox News he still believes there will be a solution to this conflict, and one way to achieve it is to stop Europe's purchase of Russian oil.

"In the end, if oil prices go down, or if Russia doesn't sell oil, they have no choice but to make peace, and EU countries or NATO countries when they buy oil from Russia, that's not the best thing," said President Trump.
