JAKARTA - Member of Commission XIII DPR RI PDIP faction, Marinus Gea, strongly criticized the criminalization experienced by more than 3,300 people in the demonstration since August 25, 2025. This is because they are suspected of being charged with provocation and treason.

According to him, the act or alleged criminalization has the potential to violate human rights (HAM), especially freedom of expression.

"The practice of sweeping, arbitrary arrests, and the use of rubber articles to silence students, activists, and independent media is not in line with the spirit of reform," Marinus Gea said in his statement, Friday, September 19.

In fact, these rights are guaranteed in the constitution and the main pillars of post-reformed democracy. Therefore, repressive law enforcement patterns actually hurt the principle of democracy which has been upheld.

Not only that, this action also immediately increased the distance of distrust between the people and the state.

Marinus Gea also said that the criminalization of thousands of people was not in line with the government's efforts which had echoed commitments to openness and community participation in the democratic process.

The pressing approach will only lead to public resistance, not solving problems. This situation has the potential to hinder the creation of a healthy political climate and constructive dialogue," he said.

Therefore, he encouraged law enforcement officials to stop arbitrary actions and prioritize communication space with civil society.

Marinus Gea then reminded that the 1998 reforms had paved the way for the birth of a democratic political order.

"All practices that return to repressive patterns are seen as setbacks that can erode public trust in the country," Marinus said.
