JAKARTA An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 rocked the Karatung Island area, North Sulawesi, on Thursday 18 September morning. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake occurred at 10.47 WIB with the center of shock at coordinates 4.28 south latitude (LS) and 127.77 east longitude (BT).

The epicenter was located about 93 kilometers southeast of Karatung Island with a depth of 118 kilometers. Although the shock was felt in several areas, the BMKG ensured that this earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

"Earthquakes do not have the potential for a tsunami. Be careful of aftershocks that may occur," wrote BMKG through X's official account.

BMKG urges the public to remain vigilant but not panic. Residents are asked to follow disaster emergency response procedures in the event of further shocks, such as staying away from buildings that are cracked or potentially collapsing, looking for safe open areas, and ensuring evacuation routes are not hindered.

The community is also advised to check the condition of their respective homes after the earthquake, especially on the roof, walls, and electrical installations. If a risky damage is found, immediately repair it or report it to the authorities.

"Make sure to remain calm, don't be provoked by incorrect information, and always follow official directions from the BMKG and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD)," wrote BMKG.

Until now, BMKG is still monitoring the development of seismic activity around North Sulawesi and will update if there is a significant change.
