JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto explained the condition of victims of last weekend's demonstrations, who had to undergo kidney transplants and even kidney surgery.
President Prabowo detailed that of the 43 victims, consisting of police officers and civilians, 17 are currently being treated at the National Police Hospital, comprising 14 police officers and 3 civilians.
"I've seen 13 of them; some of them are in serious condition. Their heads required kidney surgery. The surgery involved replacing their skulls with titanium," said President Prabowo during a press conference after visiting victims of the demonstrations in the Promoter Room at the National Police Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, on Monday, September 1, as reported by ANTARA.
Prabowo explained that one of the victims he visited was a woman on her way to the market on a motorcycle.
Not only was the motorcycle stolen, but the demonstrators also broke her thigh.
Prabowo also revealed that the most serious victim is suffering from kidney failure and requires a kidney transplant.
"I want to see the most serious case. His kidney was trampled on until it was damaged. He now requires dialysis, which I know, but if necessary, we'll seek a transplant. We'll seek a transplant, if it can't be repaired, this kidney is very serious," said the President.
Prabowo emphasized that the right to express opinions and aspirations is guaranteed by law; however, demonstrations must be peaceful, permitted, and limited to 6:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
However, Prabowo highlighted the fact that trucks carrying large firecrackers approached several demonstrations, causing burns to police officers.
"Many officers were hit by firecrackers; some had their necks burned, some had their thighs burned. Imagine if a man's genitals were burned. In my opinion, this was indeed a riot, with the intention of setting fires. The truck was found containing fire-fighting equipment," Prabowo said.
