Stay Alert! West Sumatra's Marapi Mountain Erupts Again This Afternoon

The Gunung Marapi Volcano Post (PGA) reported that the volcano in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra Province (West Sumatra) erupted again on Wednesday afternoon at 14:45 WIB after previously erupted at 09:14 WIB.

"There was an eruption of Mount Marapi in West Sumatra at 14:45 WIB, but the height of the ash column was not observed," said PGA Gunung Marapi officer Ahmad Rifandi in Padang, Wednesday.

In his report, Ahmad Rifandi said the eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters and lasted about 35 seconds.

At the first eruption at 09:14 WIB, PGA noted that the height of the ash column was observed to be about 800 meters above the top of the mountain. This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 27.1 millimeters and was about 38 seconds long.

Currently, Mount Marapi is still on Alert status or Level II. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) issued a number of recommendations, including prohibiting people, tourists, or visitors from doing activities within a three-kilometer radius from the activity center (Verbeek Luxury).

PVMBG also reminded the threat of cold lava potential, especially for people living along rivers that originate from the top of the volcano.
