Colombian Presidential Candidate Killed In Burial, His Wife In Tears

JAKARTA - Colombia buried the presidential candidate (candidate) Miguel Uribe who died in a bloody shooting incident. His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, was in tears reminding the country not to repeat the history of his dark and long political violence.

"Our country is experiencing the darkest, saddest, and most painful days," Maria said before the overcrowded funeral ceremony attended by the public, Thursday, August 14, quoted from AFP.

Miguel, a former conservative senator, was shot in June 2025. The bloody incident took place when the 39-year-old was campaigning in the Colombian capital, Bogota.

After undergoing intensive care due to gunshot wounds, Miguel died this week and was buried on Wednesday, August 13 local time.

Police accused left-wing insurgents of ignoring the 2016 peace treaty in Colombia of masterminding Miguel's murder. Six people have been arrested in connection with this incident.

For most Colombians, the killings were a shock spike in political violence after years of relatively peaceful situations.

Four Colombian presidential candidates were killed in the 1980s and 1990s, when drug cartels and various armed groups terrorized the country.
