Tigers Allegedly Killed By Concession Workers In Riau Volunteers Entering BBKSDA Traps

JAKARTA - A Sumatran tiger is suspected to have caused a worker from one of the concession areas of the Pelawan Regency company to die and has entered the trap cage of the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA).

Head of BBKSDA Riau Supartono explained that the tiger, which was classified as a teenager, was previously caught on surveillance cameras installed by the field team, after reports of attacks on a worker. The trap cage was then installed on Monday 11 August.

"After the camera photographed a teenage tiger, we immediately installed a box trap - trap cage - on August 11 afternoon, the animal entered the trap at around 16.00 WIB," he said in Pekanbaru Wednesday, Seized by Antara.

The tiger, which is estimated to be around five years old, was immediately examined at the location. Subsequently, officers took blood samples, feces, and saliva to be tested in a laboratory in Dharmasraya, West Sumatra.

"This examination aims to determine whether there is human DNA in the body or tiger impurity, which can strengthen allegations of being related to cases of attacks on workers," said Supartono.

Previously, a company worker suffered serious injuries as a result of a tiger attack. The victim suffered lacerations to the head and fractures to the left arm.

"The latest information on the victim died," said Supartono.

Currently, he continued, the tiger was temporarily deposited in the animal rescue center while waiting for laboratory test results. The Riau BBKSDA also continues to coordinate with various parties, including the Sumatran tiger rehabilitation center, to determine the next steps.

"The safety of the community and the preservation of Sumatran tigers are equally important. We will make the best decisions based on the results of the examination and study of experts," he said.
