JAKARTA - The owner and contractor of a three-story apartment whose building collapsed was rocked by a 6.1 Turkish magnitude earthquake (M) was detained by the police.
Citing AFP, Tuesday, August 12, Turkish officials said the arrest of the owner and contractor was part of the investigation process that alleged negligence caused the building to collapse.
The three-story apartment is located in Sindirgi City, Balikesi Province, collapsed when the earthquake hit Turkey on Sunday last week.
As a result of the collapsed building, an elderly man died, while 29 others were injured.
According to the Turkish Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, the total number of buildings that collapsed due to the earthquake amounted to 16 buildings, most of which were abandoned village houses.
Turkish Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu said of the 29 people hospitalized, 19 people had been discharged on Monday. Those who are still hospitalized are not in serious condition.
Meanwhile, more than 200 aftershocks occurred in Turkey, with the strongest earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6.
