British PM Holds Emergency Cabinet Meeting To Discuss Gaza Situation

JAKARTA - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will hold an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Gaza and the proposed peace plan.

Starmer took steps by recalling his cabinet during the summer holidays to discuss how to send more humanitarian aid to Gaza.

In a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Scotland on Monday, Starmer discussed the need for a ceasefire in Gaza and what he called a "disgraceful" humanitarian crisis.

Britain is working on the plan with France and Germany after telephone talks between the leaders of the three countries last week.

Starmer has not shared details of the plan, but over the weekend he compared the proposal with "a willing coalition", an international effort to support Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire in its war with Russia.

A spokesman for Starmer said Britain's PM would discuss the plan with other international allies and countries in the Middle East.

The war has been raging in Gaza between Israel and Palestinian militant Hamas for the past 22 months. Israel has faced growing international criticism, which its government denies over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

With the warning of Gazans facing starvation, more and more lawmakers in the Starmer-led Labor Party want it to recognize the Palestinian state in order to pressure Israel.

British Foreign Minister David Lemmy will attend a United Nations (UN) conference in New York on Tuesday to urge support for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

British governments have repeatedly stated that they will officially recognize the Palestinian state when the time is right, without ever setting a schedule or detailing the required requirements.

This issue surfaced after President Emmanuel Macron said France would recognize Palestine as a country.

Starmer has so far rejected plans to immediately recognize the Palestinian state, saying it focuses on "practical solutions".

Last week, more than 200 British lawmakers from nine parties signed a letter calling for immediate recognition of the Palestinian state.
