Germany Has No Plans To Recognize Palestinian Countries

JAKARTA - The German government does not plan to recognize the Palestinian state in the short term. Germany stated its priority at this time is to achieve progress towards a solution of two countries related to Gaza.

"Therefore, the German government does not plan to recognize the Palestinian state in the short term," a spokesman for the German government said.

Germany's affirmation follows France's decision to recognize the Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly (UN) in September also drew criticism from Israel and the United States, amid an ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Germany's stance on Israel is strongly influenced by what it considers a special responsibility to redeem the Nazi Holocaust against European Jews who killed six million people during the Hitler regime of 1933-1945.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the decision on Thursday evening, shortly before British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he would hold an emergency call with France and Germany over the humanitarian situation in Gaza on Friday.

Meanwhile, Britain's top priority is to ease suffering in Gaza and secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the cabinet minister said, even as Starmer was under growing pressure to recognize the Palestinian state.

Italian Foreign Minister said Palestinian state recognition should coincide with Israel's recognition by the new entity.

"Palestinian countries that do not recognize Israel mean this issue will not be resolved," Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said at a meeting of his conservative party, Forza Italia.

France's move, though symbolic, underscores Israel's increasing international isolation of the devastating war in Gaza and could open the door for other major countries to follow suit.
