Poland Reveals The Great Discovery Of Oil-Gas In The Baltic Sea

JAKARTA - Canadian company Central European Petroleum announced the discovery of Poland's largest conventional oil field.

The discovery took place in the Baltic Sea, about six kilometers from Poland's northwestern port of Swinoujscie.

The Wolin East oil field is estimated to contain 22 million tons of hydrocarbon that can be extracted and five billion cubic meters of commercial natural gas.

Central European Petroleum described it as the largest conventional oil discovery in Polish history and one of the largest in Europe.

Natural gas reserves within the Wolin concession are equivalent to more than 300 million barrels of oil.

Reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Monday, July 21, the drilling was carried out by the United States company, Noble Corporation.

Meanwhile, Zenith Energy, a technical consulting services firm and project management, announced earlier this year that the Wolin East 1 well had been successfully handed over to Central European Petroleum.

Coal consumption in Poland has decreased, but the use of oil and gas continues to increase, making the country one of the four countries with the highest emissions in the world.

In June 2025, renewable energy sources generated 44.1 percent of Polish electricity, while coal and lignite power plants produced 43.7 percent, according to the Ringergy Forum Institute.

Poland's dependence on energy imports has risen from 29 percent in the past decade to 45 percent today with nearly 97 percent of its crude oil coming from imports.

The country also imports most of the gas in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Middle East and the United States through new terminals in Gdansk and Swinoujscie, as well as natural gas channeled through pipes from Norway.

The discovery of energy reserves in the Baltic Sea is expected to reduce Poland's dependence on foreign energy sources and also potentially affect Germany's energy market nearby.
