JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission V of the DPR, Syaiful Huda, highlighted the occurrence of repeated passenger ship accidents. Huda also urged the government, in this case, the Ministry of Transportation and other relevant institutions, to evaluate standard operating procedures (SOP) for shipping in Indonesia.
The latest passenger ship accident happened to KM Barcelona V which caught fire in the waters of Talise, North Sulawesi. In the incident, three people were declared dead and two people are still in the process of being searched.
"We are very concerned about the repeated accidents of passenger ships in recent times. The problem of the sinking of KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya in the Bali Strait, now KM Barcelona is on fire in the waters of Talise which also asks for casualties. We hope that there will be breakthrough steps from the Ministry of Transportation to ensure the feasibility of passenger ships in the country," said Huda at the DPR building, Monday, July 21.
Huda emphasized that the repeated accidents of passenger ships in Indonesia must be a serious concern of the Ministry of Transportation. Moreover, said Huda, based on existing data, nearly 90 percent of ship accidents in Indonesia were triggered by human negligence.
"This means that if there is strict supervision from the authorities, the potential for fatal accidents that can take the lives of humans can be reduced to a minimum," he said.
He revealed that the form of human negligence triggered the ship accident, ranging from the lack of engine maintenance, overload, to the absence of charge stability. Therefore, Huda assessed that it is important to evaluate the standard operating procedure (SOP) of Shipping in Indonesia.
"We consider that it is necessary to evaluate and improve the Shipping SOP regarding cargo procedures, navigation management, and maintenance procedures," said Huda.
"In addition, it must be ensured that the number of passengers and cargo is in accordance with the ship's capacity," he added.
Huda emphasized that the government cannot allow incident after incident to occur in sea transportation. According to him, this ship fire shows that there is still a weak system of safety and protection for sea transportation passengers.
"Investigate the fire of this ship. Find out the source of the initial fire and what caused the fire to occur. The details of the initial time of the fire to the fire process must be clear and detailed," he concluded.
It is known that KM Barcelona V, which serves the Manado-Tahuna cruise route to Manado, is expected to catch fire on Sunday, July 20, at around 13.30 WIB. A number of passengers using buoys were observed jumping after seeing the top of KM Barcelona V emitting a fire and emitting thick black smoke.
