JAKARTA The government has increased the domestic rice absorption target by 1 million tons by the end of 2025. This strategic step was taken to maintain the stability of grain prices at the farmer level and strengthen the government's rice reserves (CBP), in order to ensure national food security.

Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), Arief Prasetyo Adi, said that this additional absorption was a follow-up to the results of the Limited Coordination Meeting (Rakortas) of the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy related to food.

Additional absorption will also encourage the acceleration of the rotation of rice stocks in Perum Bulog. He conveyed this when he visited the Bulog Meger Warehouse, in Klaten, Central Java, Sunday, July 20.

"The National Food Agency in the near future will assign Bulog regarding the addition of absorption until the end of the year of 1 million tons, as decided by the Coordinating Ministry for Food Coordination Meeting some time ago," he said.

With this addition, the total target of CBP absorption is 4 million tons. This absorption is focused on absorbing domestic farmers' production rice at a minimum price of Rp. 6,500 per kilogram (kg) so that farmers' income is maintained.

Arief explained that currently the government is distributing various food aid programs, including around 360,000 tons for food assistance and 1.3 million tons for the supply and food price stabilization program (SPHP).

"This is a form of government readiness in maintaining and strengthening government food reserves, especially those that are the duties and authorities of the national food agency assisted by Bulog, of course, who are always assigned to this," he added.

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), domestic rice production in the January-August 2025 period is projected to reach 24.96 million tons or a significant increase compared to 2024 of 21.88 million tons.

With the additional supply of special rice imports of 279,150 tons, the total availability of national rice during January-August 2025 reached 25.24 million tons. Meanwhile, the need for national rice consumption for the same period is estimated at 20.66 million tons. This means that there is still a surplus of rice availability of 4.58 million tons.

As of July 18, 2025, Perum Bulog has absorbed the equivalent of 2.73 million tons of rice, or 91.19 percent of the 3 million tons target set in Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 6 of 2025 concerning the Procurement and Management of Grain/Domestic Rice and Distribution of CBP.

On this occasion, the President Director of Perum Bulog, Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani, ensured the readiness of his institution in carrying out additional assignments from the government.

He mentioned that cross-sectoral synergies, including with the TNI and Polri, are being built to support the realization of absorption.

"We are currently building a team involving all stakeholders, including the ranks of the TNI and Polri. In addition to the additional absorption of 1 million tons of rice, we are also assigned to absorb 1 million tons of corn," said Rizal.

This additional absorption will also involve active cooperation with rice milling partners, local governments, and other relevant agencies to ensure smooth distribution and quality of national food stocks.
