GRESIK - Minister of Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), Abdul Kadir Karding, inaugurated five villages in Gresik Regency as Golden Migrant Villages. The five villages are Campurejo, Cangaan, Dalegan, Mentaras, and Ngemboh villages.
The inauguration was carried out by signing a direct inscription by Minister Karding at the Pusponegoro Expression Wahana Hall, Gresik, East Java, Friday, July 11.
Karding said Gresik is one of the districts that has many residents working abroad. Therefore, strengthening protection from the village level is crucial.
"We have to keep them protected and make sure those who want to go abroad really go well and safely," said Karding after the inauguration.
The establishment of the Golden Migrant Village is a strategic step to improve the labor migration ecosystem from villages, as well as prevent non-procedural or illegal migration practices.
"The protection that we are doing is as much as possible to consolidate all potential so that we can reduce people who depart non-procedurally. It can only be done by improving the ecosystem in villages," he explained.
On that occasion, Minister Karding also encouraged the Gresik Regency Government to develop migrant class programs in vocational and university schools.
"Everyone who departs must have sufficient skills, knowledge of language, and a good mentality so that it does not become a problem in people's countries," he said.
Meanwhile, the Regent of Gresik, Fandi Akhmad Yani, emphasized his regional commitment to strengthening protection for migrant workers. He said, although Gresik is not the largest migrant worker pocket in East Java, it has a strong monitoring culture.
"We already have Regional Regulation Number 7 of 2022 and Perbup Number 71 of 2024 concerning the protection of migrant workers. This shows the local government's commitment so that migrant workers from Gresik are not explored and their rights can be protected," said Fandi.
He also emphasized the importance of preparing competent human resources and ready to compete before leaving for overseas, including through language, skills, and mental training.
