JAKARTA - DPR Speaker Puan Maharani stated that her institution has not taken a stand regarding the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) regarding the separation of national elections and regional elections.

The DPR will pay close attention to the decision, including what the impact will be on the election laws and political parties.

"From the DPR, according to the mechanism, of course, we will take steps or observe this and then look for the steps we take, and how we take this to take the best steps. Of course for political parties," said Puan, Tuesday, July 1.

"And later, of course, there will be an effect on the election law. But we have not discussed the election law, therefore the DPR and the government will pay close attention to the decision from the Constitutional Court," continued the chairman of the PDIP DPP.

Puan revealed that the leadership of the DPR together with the leadership of Commission II of the DPR had held a consultation meeting to discuss the latest Constitutional Court decisions.

His party has opened an option to form a special committee or discussion which will be held during the next session.

"Yesterday, as we know that the DPR and the government have a consultation meeting to discuss the Constitutional Court's decision regarding separate elections. Is this next step possible for the DPR to open a special committee, form a special committee for the Pilkada Law? And will the possibility be discussed during this session or in the future?," explained Puan.

"But a decision has not been made because yesterday I just listened to input from the government," he added.

Puan emphasized that the DPR's stance regarding the Constitutional Court's decision was the attitude of all factions representing political parties in parliament.

Including the matter of a 2-2.5 year gap between the implementation of the national election and regional elections, which will have an impact on extending the term of office of the regional head.

"This is not only the attitude of the PDI-P faction, but of course all parties, because the basic law states that actually the election is held once every five years or is held every 5 years. Therefore, all political parties, the impact or effect of the Constitutional Court's decision," said Puan.

"So we all parties will gather after yesterday listening to input from the government and representatives from the community, and later the DPR representing from political parties through its factions, of course, the attitude of the party itself is one thing, becoming the voice of us political parties, to voice this means the DPR RI," concluded Puan.

Previously, on Thursday, June 2, the Constitutional Court (MK) decided that the holding of elections at the national level should be carried out separately from regional or city-level elections (local elections) which are held no later than 2 years or no later than 2.5 years after the national election.

The national elections are the elections for members of the DPR, DPD, and the president and vice president. Meanwhile, local elections consist of elections for provincial/district/city DPRD members as well as regional head elections and deputy heads. With this latest decision of the Constitutional Court, simultaneous elections will no longer apply to the 2029 General Election.
