JAKARTA - Black-clad mourners gathered on the streets of Iran's capital, Tehran, on Saturday to attend the funerals of military commanders, nuclear scientists, and a number of civilians killed during the war with Israel.

At least 16 scientists and 10 senior commanders were among those grieving the funeral, according to state media.

They include the Chief of Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri, the Commander of the Revolutionary Guard General Hossein Salami, and the Head of the Aerospace Forces of the Garda General Amir Ali Hajizadeh.

Bagheri, Salami, and Hajizadeh were killed on June 13, the first day of Iran's war with Israel.

Their coffins were brought to Azadi Square in Tehran decorated with their photos as well as rose petals and flowers, while the masses waved the Iranian flag.

The state-run Press TV broadcasts images of the ballistic missiles on display.

State TV said the funeral procession, dubbed the "Martyrs of Power", was held for a total of 60 people who died in the war, including four women and four children.

Those attending the funeral included Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior figures including Ali Shamkhani, adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who was seriously injured during the conflict.

Israel, the only Middle Eastern country believed to have nuclear weapons, said its war against its regional rival Iran was aimed at preventing Tehran from developing its own nuclear weapons.

Iran denies having a nuclear weapons program. Meanwhile, the UN nuclear watchdog, which conducts inspections in Iran, said it had no "credible indications" of an active coordinated weapons program in Iran.

A senior Israeli military official said on Friday, June 28, Israel had killed more than 30 senior security officials and 11 senior nuclear scientists during the war.

According to Iran's health ministry figures, 610 people died on the Iranian side in the 12-day war, 13 of whom were children and 49 women, before the ceasefire took effect on Tuesday, June 24.

More than 4,700 people were reportedly injured in the Iran-Israel war.
