UN Secretary General: US Bombing Of Iran's Nuclear Facilities Marks Dangerous Change

JAKARTA - The UN Security Council held a meeting to discuss the US attack on Iran's nuclear site. Russia, China and Pakistan proposed that the 15-member body adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East.

"The bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities by the United States marks dangerous changes," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council on Sunday, June 23.

"We must act immediately and decisively to stop fighting and return to serious and ongoing negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear program," he continued.

The world awaits Iran's response after President Donald Trump said the US had "destroyed" Tehran's main nuclear site.

Russia and China condemned the US attack.

"The peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved with the use of force," said China's Ambassador to the United Nations Fu Cong. "The diplomatic way to address Iran's nuclear problem has not run out, and there is still hope for a peaceful solution," he added.

However, US Ambassador to the United Nations Dorothy Shea told the council it was time for Washington to take firm action.

Shea urged the Security Council to ask Iran to end its efforts to attack Israel and stop nuclear weapons.

"Iran has long obscured its nuclear weapons program and hindered our good faith efforts in recent negotiations," he said.

Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia recalls former US Secretary of State Colin Powell expressing his opinion on the UN Security Council in 2003 on Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is a threat to the world because of the country's supply of chemical weapons and biology.

"Once again we were asked to believe the US fairy tale, to once again cause suffering to the millions of people living in the Middle East. This reinforces our belief that history teaches our US counterparts nothing," he said.
