Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his country supported the US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and called for a deescalation and a return to diplomacy.
"The world has long agreed that Iran should not be allowed to own nuclear weapons and we support measures to prevent them," Albanese told reporters in Canberra on Monday, June 23.
Albanese also agrees that Iran has enriched uranium to 60%.
"There is no other explanation to reach 60 percent, other than being involved in programs that are not related to civilian nuclear power," he said.
The International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog examining Iran's nuclear facilities, reported on May 31 that Iran had enough uranium enriched to 60%, if further enriched, for nine nuclear weapons.
"If Iran complies with the very reasonable requests put forward, including by the IAEA, then the situation will be different," Albanese said, referring to enrichment restrictions.
In a series of television and radio interviews on Monday, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the SAS attack was a unilateral action by her security ally of the United States, and Australia joined calls from Britain and other countries for Iran to return to the negotiating table.
"We support the actions the US has taken to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons," Wong said in a television interview with Seven Sunrise.
"We don't want to see the escalation," he told reporters in Canberra.
There are about 2,900 Australians in Iran and 1,300 in Iran seeking to leave the country.
Australia closed its embassy in Tehran on Friday last week after Wong spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Australia has also suspended bus evacuations from Israel following the US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, but is making preparations for a potential evacuation if airspace in Israel reopens.
Two defense aircraft were sent by Australia to the Middle East in a non-fight role to help evacuate civilians.
