JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono appreciated Azerbaijan's assistance in the process of evacuating Indonesian citizens (WNI) from Iran to the country before being flown to the country.
The appreciation was conveyed by Foreign Minister Sugiono in line with the process of evacuating 96 Indonesian citizens from Iran which was carried out on Saturday, June 21.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement as quoted on Monday, June 23, said Foreign Minister Sugiono directly expressed his appreciation to Foreign Minister Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov when he met on the sidelines of the 51st Ministerial Conference of Organizations for Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul, Turkey on June 21-22.
It is known that the government through the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran and the Indonesian Embassy in Baku managed to evacuate 97 people from Iran to Azerbaijan.
They consist of 93 Indonesian citizens, three Indonesian Embassy staff accompanying the evacuation process, one foreigner who is the wife of an Indonesian citizen. In detail, the number consists of 53 men and 44 women, including five children.
Evacuation and contingency steps were taken after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised the standby status of the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran to Alert 1. After 16 hours of land travel and through Astara City, those evacuated were in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Azerbaijan also had concerns about the development of the Iran-Israel situation which could have an impact on regional stability and security.
In addition to discussing regional issues, Azerbaijan also appreciated the cooperation with Indonesia as a fellow member of the OIC and Non-Aligned Movement (GNB), thanking Indonesia for Indonesia's support for its candidacy for Azerbaijan as a member of the D8 (Developing State Group) in 2024.
