Military Regime Inaugurates A Luxury Hospital, The Room Rates Are Expensive For Myanmar Citizens

JAKARTA - The Myanmar military regime has added back to their business portfolio, along with the inauguration of a top class military hospital in Yangon last weekend.

Amid anti-coup demonstrations that have killed at least 760 protesters, the Leader of the Myanmar Military Regime, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, inaugurated a top-class hospital on Sunday 2 Meri.

Named MoeKaung Treasure Maternal and Child Hospital, it will be the Myanmar military's second high-end private hospital, after Kan Tha Yar Hospital on the shores of Inya Lake, Yangon.

According to Justice for Myanmar, a group of secretive activists who campaign for justice and accountability for the country's people, the Kan Thar Yar International Specialist Hospital, opened in 2017 by a senior general, is a private non-profit facility under the Myanmar military conglomerate, the Economic Corporation (MEC). .

Profits from hospitals are off-budget and hospitals operate without civilian oversight. The same applies to the recently opened MoeKaung Treasure Maternal and Child Hospital.

Located next to the documentation office and media center of the Myanmar military regime in Yankin Township, the inauguration of this hospital was directly realized by the wife of the leader of the Myanmar military regime, Kyu Kyu Hla.

"This new hospital was built under the guidance of a Senior General, to become an internationally recognized medical facility that citizens can rely on while promoting the private health care sector," Myawaddy's military TV, as reported by The Irrawaddy, Tuesday 4 May.

A number of maternal and child health services are available at this hospital, such as in vitro fertilization, storage of genetic items and genetic diagnostic work. The hospital also plans to obtain a certificate of international recognition for the hospital, Joint Commission International.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said that this hospital would later aim to become a one-stop service center, with a service fee that was reasonable for the community.

However, in reality, the hospital room usage rate per day cannot be called cheap, amidst the economic downturn in Myanmar since the military coup on February 1. A number of rooms here have a rate of up to 100 thousand kyats per day.

It is unclear so far, the involvement and role of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and his family in the ownership of the new hospital.
